His research interests include hepatitis B and C epidemiology, syndemics of substance use, mental illness and blood-borne and sexually transmitted infections, intervention effectiveness, disparities in treatment access and disease outcomes, and strategies to enhance access to care.

Most of his current work is based on the BC Hepatitis Testers Cohort. His global health research includes unsafe medical injections and transmission of bloodborne pathogens, socio-economic disparities in health, and scale-up of hepatitis testing and treatment in South Asia developing countries. He has been involved in initiatives to design and scale-up testing, linkage with care and treatment for HCV in various settings. He is also a member of various national networks including the Canadian Hepatitis C Network (CanHepC) and the CIHR Canadian HIV Trials Network (CTN).
