Mental Health Issues in B.C.
JPuyat---Depression

In a radio interview on the Jon McComb Show, CHÉOS Scientist Dr. Joseph Puyat discussed some of the challenges to accessing mental health services and the steps that can be taken to improve access to care. Dr. Puyat has done research on the gaps in BC’s mental health system; he found cost to be one of the barriers to accessing care because of shortfalls in the coverage provided by the B.C.’s healthcare system.

Interview 4: Dr. Nick Bansback & Maya Heons Joshi

Ahead of the KT Canada Scientific Meeting, CHÉOS Scientist Dr. Nick Bansback was live streamed over Periscope for the Arthritis Network, sharing the importance of engaging patients in health economics research.

He explained how, in research and policy, often efficacy is prioritized, but that there is a need for consideration of patients’ values and preferences early on in the process in order to make the most beneficial decisions.
He also spoke in depth about the topic at the conference which took place June 7-8, 2018.

More than two-thirds of CVD risk in OA linked to NSAID use
CANAFORD

CHÉOS Director Dr. Aslam Anis and fellow researchers estimated the effect of non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs), a key component of treatment for osteoarthritis, on the relationship between the osteoarthritis and cardiovascular disease. They found that NSAIDs significantly increase the risk of congestive heart failure, ischemic heart disease, and stroke in those with osteoarthritis. Dr. Anis spoke about his research in a press release at the Annual European Congress of Rheumatology and several news outlets including HealioMedical Xpress, News-Medical.Net, and Rheumatology Advisor reported on the findings.
