CHÉOS Director Aslam Anis was quoted in a number of news stories about a recent publication, co-authored by Anis and CHÉOS Scientists Hubert Wong and Ehsan Karim and led by CHÉOS Trainee Mohammad Atiquzzaman. The study found that nearly half of the increased risk of cardiovascular disease seen in people living with osteoarthritis is due to their use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) drugs. Dr. Anis was quoted in over 20 news outlets, including the New York Times. Dr. Anis also co-authored an op-ed appearing in the Vancouver Sun describing the implications of the Biosimilars Initiative, which will move patients with arthritis, and other health concerns, from their original biologic medication to the biosimilar version. Finally, Dr. Anis appeared on the radio show NL Newsday and discussed recent changes to federal regulations of drug prices.

Towards elimination of hepatitis C in B.C.


In his role as a senior scientist with the Hepatitis Program at the B.C. Centre for Disease Control, CHÉOS Scientist Dr. Naveed Janjua spoke with CityNews and Castanet about the state of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the province. He noted that, because all HCV treatments are covered by PharamaCare, most of the 3,000 people diagnosed last year have already been cured. Over the last 30 years, more than 20,000 people have been treated and cured in B.C.

Novel treatment for Crohn’s disease


CHÉOS Scientist Dr. Shirin Kalyan, who is also Scientific Director at Qu Biologics, a Vancouver biopharmaceutical company, was quoted in a Yahoo! press release about a potential new treatment for Crohn’s disease. The release was based on a recent publication, co-authored by Dr. Kalyan, about a randomized controlled trial testing the effectiveness of a novel microbial-based immunotherapy to treat this chronic inflammatory disease.

New employment support system coming to Downtown Eastside


CHÉOS Scientist Dr. Skye Barbic was quoted in a number of news stories, including in CTV News and Vancouver Is Awesome, about a new study that is looking at innovative approaches to address employment challenges in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Dr. Barbic is the lead scientist on the study which is supported by the Canadian Mental Health Association.

Incentives in the Emergency Department


Dr. Garth Hunte, CHÉOS Emergency Medicine Scientist, was quoted in press releases on EurekAlert!, Global Health Newswire, and ScienceDaily about a recent study he co-authored that looked at the result of incentives to improve emergency department lengths-of-stay. Dr. Hunte was quoted about the recommendations that can be made based on this research.

 

Provincial perspective on opioid lawsuit


CHÉOS Scientist Dr. Eugenia Oviedo-Joekes spoke with CityNews about an Oklahoma court’s ruling that fined the pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson for its role in the fueling the state’s opioid crisis. The video also appeared on Breakfast Television.

 

Mental health care in B.C.


Dr. Joseph Puyat was mentioned in a Vice story about mental health care coverage in Canada. The story discussed Dr. Puyat’s research about how the health system treats people with depression.

 

CHÉOS in the Daily Scan


A number of CHÉOS Scientists were featured in The Daily Scan, PHC’s source for newsworthy and up-to-date stories on research across PHC. Dr. Carl Brown was featured in a story about the benefits of colonoscopy, Dr. Karin Humphries was mentioned in a story about the new SAVE BC study, Dr. Adeera Levin answered common questions about kidney stones, and Dr. Troy Grennan was featured in a story about rising rates of syphilis in the province.
