Health Care Funding Policy: Where are the Opportunities?

There is ample evidence that health care providers respond to financial incentives. Are the current policies achieving what the health system needs to improve? Provinces use several approaches to pay for health services, including global budgets for hospitals and fee-for-service for specialty care. In other countries, new policy efforts include paying for performance and value-based purchasing. The different methods create incentives for certain behaviours and outcomes–some are predictable, while others have been unexpected. This talk will review Canadian health care funding policies, their incentives and opportunities for improvement.

Work in Progress (WiP) presentations take place at St. Paul’s Hospital in the Hurlburt Auditorium on alternating Wednesdays from 12:00–1:00 PM. These seminars provide investigators with an opportunity to present ongoing research, obtain feedback from colleagues and peers, and make new connections for their projects. Talks are open, and a light lunch is served.
